The seat of Roman Catholicism and one of the smallest city states in the world, Vatican City is much more than its fame as the office of the Roman Catholic Church (Pope). On a visit, one can enjoy browsing some of the most stunning museums and churches in the world.
The city is essentially a walled enclave off 44 hectares and situated within Rome. It was founded on February 11th 1929 as a result of the Lateran Pacts. Today, it’s a place of immense cultural significance, not only for Christian pilgrims but for the followers of other religions and cults, too.
Major attractions in the city include the magnificent St Peter’s Basilica, which is regarded as the most beautiful church in the world, Saint Peter's Piazza, and the Vatican museums, which date from the 1200s onwards. You can’t help falling in love with the frescos of Sistine Chapel, which were created by the greatest Renaissance artists such as Botticelli, Bernini and Michelangelo.
