Belarus

Located in the eastern part of Europe, the Republic of Belarus is not known so much for its Jewish history as it is known for its reputation as a battleground for Napoleonic wars, WWI, and WWII. On a visit, the country gives a closer and invaluable insight into the rich Jewish history.

The country is divided into 6 administrative provinces- Brest, Gomel, Grodna, Minsk, Magilyov and Vitsebsk Oblast, with Minsk as the capital city. There are numerous historical, architectural, and cultural artifacts scattered all over the country, wth the cities reflecting its turbulent history.

From the half-destroyed XII-XIV century century castles to the reasonably preserved monuments at Mir, Nyasvizh, Zaslaue, Lida, and Kamianec, the country is a fabulous treat for the enthusiasts of history. One finds numerous 12th century orthodox churches in Hrodna, Mahilyow, and Polacak. In fact, Polacak, which is home to St. Sophia Cathedral and The Holy  Savior Church, is considered the cradle of Belarusian culture and statehood.

For visitors, Minsk offers all the modern comforts and luxuries. Here, you’ll find everything from upscale and mid-range hotels, gourmet restaurants, first rate shopping centers and glitzy night spots. No wonder, it’s the political, economic, scientific and cultural nerve center of the country.

Preserving the rich culture and fascinating history and, at the same time, developing into an industrialized nation, Belarus is a country worth visiting.
